Gurung and help from the Greendale Foundation, established the Himalayan Children’s Foundation (HCF) as an NGO in Kathmandu. After meeting on a trek to Mustang in 1999, Micheline Kramer and David Bidwell decided to work together to expand HCF, and their efforts led to the creation of Himalayan Youth Foundation. David’s love for Nepal evolved from a nine month volunteer assignment with the International Executive Service Corps as Country Director for Nepal in 1993. He was instrumental in the development of Kailash Hostel in 1997 and was a personal friend of the Choki family in Bhutan for many years. Over the years, his tireless devotion to HYF and the children guided the continued growth of HYF projects around the region. David had a vision and a dream and the inspiration to make it all happen. One of HYF’s first collaborations with the school was the construction of a toilet & washroom building with an adjacent 100-bed boys’ dormitory. In 2006, HYF purchased an additional 30 decimal of land to be used for a girl’s hostel. With the assistance of a generous donor, Koenraad Foulon, a 50-bed girls’ dormitory and a new kitchen building were built. Since its’ inauguration, the Leila Foulon Girls Hostel has been home to over 60 young women who are now proud graduates of CTAS. The most recent investment project on campus was the construction of a new classroom building. At the school’s inception, only painting was taught, but gradually, various choices of courses were offered to encourage both boys and girls. The school also currently offers a variety of extracurricular like courses in basic English and math, Dzongkha, computer literacy, and Driglam-Namzha (Bhutan’s code of etiquette) as well as other cultural activities, sports, and farming/ gardening. Students are encouraged to learn and develop their abilities within a caring, stimulating and challenging environment underpinned by our core values of excellence, enjoyment, respect and equality. They are professional painters, carvers, embroiders, and weavers in Art Galleries across Bhutan. CTAS Alumni have also gone on to become entrepreneurs, opening galleries and handicraft stores, as well as successful contractors, taking part in businesses relating to painting works, carving works, and embroidery. Their work can be found in the renovation of iconic dzongs and temples throughout Bhutan. In addition to experiencing personal achievement, these successful CTAS alumni are often in a position to offer employment to other youths furthering the outreach and mission of the school. In this way CTAS actively provides everyday solutions to the national employment struggle while also contributing to the continuing economic development of the country of Bhutan. Our sponsorship program pairs individual sponsors with children at the time of their arrival for a minimum 6 year commitment at just over $2,000/year. Our main goal is to provide all of our children with a stable family environment at Kailash and a longterm connection with their sponsor. Throughout sponsorship HYF provides details of each child’s progress in school and at Kailash Home. Individual dialogue between the sponsor and child via letters, emails, and video calls is actively encouraged. A number of sponsors have even chosen to visit Nepal to meet their Kailash Kids in person, and some go on to continue supporting and communicating with their children even after they leave Kailash Home. Regardless of their specific path, our young people often continue to need our support. For under $3,000/year sponsorship covers a variety of expenses potentially including university tuition, on the job training or internship programs, and books and other supplies, depending on the student. Unlike our Kailash Kid Sponsorship, our Graduate Program has no minimum annual commitment, generally lasting between one and four years, and donations can be made in any increment at any time. This giving opportunity is ideal for friends of HYF who want to support our young people in a more flexible way without the additional responsibilities and time commitment of sponsoring a younger child. At HYF we believe that maintaining cultural and geographical ties to their roots enables our children to become better stewards of their communities in the future. Each year a number of our children are escorted back to their home villages by a member of Kailash staff for an extended stay.
